PSSC Chair Attends Pacific Taskforce on SDGs Meeting 22-23 June in Suva PSSC Chair Attends Pacific Taskforce on SDGs Meeting 22-23 June in Suva Suva, FIJI ——–The chairman of the Pacific Statistics Steering Committee (PSSC) has welcomed and commended the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) for prioritising and including statistics in regional development discussions including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). PSSC Chair, Simil Johnson said the move by PIFS indicate a shift in the thinking of Pacific leaders regarding the importance of statistics as a measuring tool. “I have been in the field of statistics for over 30years now and am witnessing a breakthrough in the way our work as statisticians is being given priority and elevated,” Mr Johnson said. Mr Johnson made the comments after his participation at the Pacific SDGs Task Force meeting in Suva yesterday. “This is showing that our leaders are now more concerned that without statistics, no credible information can be provided to measure performance from national, regional to international levels on these goals,” he said. He said the fact that members of the Pacific SDG Task Force dedicated a lot of time to discussing the need for a set of indicators that would be common across the region on the first day of the meeting is evidence that there is now an urgency for statistical capacity and expertise. “And these stakeholders from various...
